Perry Barr Constituency: Khalid Mahmood
 

The Perry Barr constituency contains the council wards of Oscott, Handsworth Wood, Perry Barr and Lozells & East Handsworth.

It is generally regarded as a safe Labour seat; it was held by Jeff Rooker from 1974 to 2001 and has been represented by Khalid Mahmood since 2001.

Khalid Mahmood MP
 

Khalid Mahmood (b 1961) is a Moslem of Pakistani descent who graduated with an engineering degree from the University of Central England (now Birmingham City University); he has a trade union background and sat on Birmingham City Council from 1990 until 1992.

Khalid Mahmood held Perry Barr for Labour in 2001 after the previous incumbent Jeff Rooker stood down. He retained the seat in 2005 and 2010 and was parliamentary private secretary to the Home Office Minister Tony McNulty in 2005-06.

The result of the May 2010 election was:

Khalid Mahmood (Labour) 21,142, Karen Hamilton (Liberal Democrat) 9,234, William Norton (Conservative) 8,960, Melvin Ward (UK Independence Party) 1,675, John Tyrell (Socialist Labour Party) 527 and Deborah Hey-Smith (Christian Party) 507

Khalid Mahmood held the seat with an increased majority of 11,908 on a turnout of 59%; there was a swing of 4.1% from the Liberal Democrats to Labour.
