The Ladywood constituency, which includes Birmingham city
centre, contains the Aston,
Ladywood,
Nechells and
Soho council wards. It is
generally regarded as a safe Labour seat.
Birmingham Ladywood was held by Claire Short from 1983 until
2010 when she stood down. The current MP is Shabana Mahmood. |

Shabana Mahmood (b 1982) was selected as Labour candidate for
Birmingham Ladywood following Claire Short's retirement.
She held the seat for Labour in May 2010.
Shabana Mahmood was born and raised in Birmingham and is a Muslim of
Pakistani descent.
She is a barrister and graduate of Lincoln College Oxford.
She was an opposition spokeswoman for Home Affairs in 2010-11
and became Shadow Minister for Business, Innovation and Skills
in October 2011

result of the May 2010 poll was:
Shabana Mahmood (Labour) 19,950, Ayoub Khan (Liberal
Democrat) 9,845, Nusrat Ghani (Conservative) 4,277, Christopher
Booth (UK Independence Party) 902, Peter Beck (Green) 859.
Shabana Mahmood held the seat with a majority of 10,105 on a
turnout of 48.7%. There was a swing of 2.5% from the Liberal
Democrats to Labour.
