Liam Byrne (b 1970) held Birmingham Hodge Hill for Labour
in May 2010.
Before entering parliament in 2004, he worked for the
management consultancy Accenture and the merchant bankers NM
Rothschild; he also formed a company providing e-solutions to
the government and co-founded the technology company eGS Group.
Liam Byrne was Minister of State for Borders and Immigration
in 2006-08, Minister for the Cabinet Office in 2008-09 and Chief
Secretary to the Treasury in 2009-10.
He famously left a note at the Treasury saying "I'm afraid
there is no money" after Labour's election defeat in May 2010.
Liam Byrne was elected to the Labour Shadow Cabinet in
October 2010; he polled the 19th highest number of votes to
secure the last available cabinet post and served as Shadow
Minister to the Cabinet Office until January 2011
