The Hodge Hill constituency contains the council wards of Hodge Hill, Shard End, Bordesley Green and Washwood Heath.

It is generally regarded as a safe Labour seat. The current MP is Liam Byrne who held the seat for Labour at a bye-election in 2004 after the previous incumbent Terry Davis was appointed Secretary General of the Council of Europe.

He has since held the seat at the May 2005 and May 2010 general elections.

Liam Byrne MP
 

Liam Byrne (b 1970) held Birmingham Hodge Hill for Labour in May 2010.

Before entering parliament in 2004, he worked for the management consultancy Accenture and the merchant bankers NM Rothschild; he also formed a company providing e-solutions to the government and co-founded the technology company eGS Group.

Liam Byrne was Minister of State for Borders and Immigration in 2006-08, Minister for the Cabinet Office in 2008-09 and Chief Secretary to the Treasury in 2009-10.

He famously left a note at the Treasury saying "I'm afraid there is no money" after Labour's election defeat in May 2010.

Liam Byrne was elected to the Labour Shadow Cabinet in October 2010; he polled the 19th highest number of votes to secure the last available cabinet post and served as Shadow Minister to the Cabinet Office until January 2011 (News Archive 12/10/10).

May 2010 Election Result
 

The result of the May 2010 election was:

Liam Byrne (Labour) 22.077, Tariq Khan (Liberal Democrat) 11,775, Shailesh Parekh (Conservative) 4,936, Richard Lumby (British Nationalist Party) 2,333, Waheed Rafiq (UK Independence Party) 714, Peter Johnson (Social Democratic Party) 637.

Liam Byrne held the seat with a majority of 10,302 on a turnout of 56.6%. There was a swing of 3.6% from the Liberal Democrats to Labour.

Birmingham Hodge Hill is also a council constituency with a district committee that is attended by the 12 councillors who represent the 4 wards that make up the constituency.

Birmingham City Council delegates some local powers to this committee.
