The Edgbaston constituency consists of four council wards:
Bartley Green,
Harborne,
Quinton and
Edgbaston. It was
traditionally a safe Conservative seat, once held by former
Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. The last Conservative MP
for Birmingham Edgbaston was Dame Jill Knight who held the seat
from 1966 until 1997 when she was created Baroness Knight of
Collingtree.
The current MP is Gisela Stuart who won the seat for Labour in May 1997. |

Gisela Stuart (b 1955) won Birmingham Edgbaston for Labour in
May 1997.
She was raised as a Roman Catholic in Germany, moved to the
UK in 1974, and graduated in law from the London School of
Economics in 1993. Before entering parliament she was an
academic, lecturing at the Worcester College of Technology.
Gisela Stuart was a Junior Health Minister until 2001; she
currently serves on the Defence Select Committee; she is
divorced with two sons.

Gisela Stuart won the seat with a majority of 1,274 on a turnout of
60.6%. The Conservatives achieved a 0.5% swing.
