Birmingham City Council
Birmingham City Council is a unitary authority responsible for the management of practically all local services.

The city is divided into 10 constituencies and 40 wards and is represented by 120 councillors

Each constituency is subdivided into 4 wards and each ward is represented by 3 councillors who are each elected for 4 years.

One councillor is elected for each ward at each election; elections are held every even year and every other odd year; the next three elections will be held in 2012, 2014 and 2015.

 
Distribution of Seats
 
The distribution of council seats in Birmingham is currently:

 55 Labour, 39 Conservative, 24 Liberal Democrats and 2 Respect.

Since no single party has an overall majority, the council is governed by a Conservative/Liberal Democrat Coalition that commands a 6 seat majority over all other parties.

 
Governance
 
Birmingham is governed by the Leader of the Council.

He is a councillor elected by a majority of the 120 city councillors.

The Leader appoints a Cabinet Committee consisting of a Deputy Leader and 8 other portfolio members, all of whom are councillors.

The current leader is Mike Whitby (Conservative); the Deputy Leader is Paul Tilsey (Liberal Democrat).

The other eight cabinet members are:

Sue Anderson (Liberal Democrat - Adults & Communities);

Les Lawrence (Conservative - Children, Young People and Families);

Alan Rudge (Conservative - Equalities and Human Resources)

Randal Brew (Conservative - Finance);

John Lines (Conservative - Housing);

Martin Mullaney (Liberal Democrat - Leisure Sport and Culture)

Tariq Ayoub Khan (Liberal Democrat - Local Services and Community Safety);

Timothy Huxtable (Conservative - Transport, Environment and Regeneration)
