It will consist of landscaped boulevards with new leisure, retail, office and residential units including 834 apartments, a multiplex cinema, a 25-storey residential tower, cultural space and underground car park.

Dale End and the Priory Shopping Centre will be demolished.

Work on the Martineau Galleries has been deferred until at least 2014 because of budget cuts.

It will be a high-rise urban village centred on two public squares with 550 apartments, 550,000 square feet of grade A office space, retail, restaurants and cafe units.

Two tower blocks, Block I and Block M, which contain a total of 340 apartments, have already been completed; however, plans for a 13-storey magistrates court have been deferred indefinitely (News Archive 29/05/10).

Birmingham Magistrates Court

There are plans for a new magistrates court with 13 floors and 24 courtrooms at Masshouse.

However, this project has been postponed indefinitely due to budget cuts.

City Park Gate
City Park Gate (map/website) is a mixed-use development between Park Street and Moor Street Queensway, Eastside.

It will link Moor Street Station and Curzon Street.

The centrepiece will be Freeman Square: a landscaped plaza with abundant greenery, mature trees, external seating, high-quality paving, a coffee pavilion, food store and sandwich shop.

Freeman Square will be flanked by high-rise commercial & residential towers containing 250 apartments, 15,000 square feet of retail space, and 450,000 square feet of grade A office space.

The development will incorporate two pre-existing buildings: the Fox & Grapes pub and an Edwardian office block called Island House.

Eastside City Park
Eastside City Park (map) will create an 8-acre green corridor running from City Park Gate, by Moor Street Station, to Masshouse, and then eastwards along Curzon Street, past Millennium Point, to Curzon Gate by the Digbeth Branch Canal.

Work began in October 2010 and the project, which has been costed at £13 million, will be completed in 2013 (News Archive 01/10/10).

Curzon Street
Curzon Street  will be redeveloped as a tree-lined boulevard parallel to the new Eastside City Park.

It will terminate in a public square that will provide a new setting for the disused Curzon Street Railway Station.

VTP 200

VTP 200 (map) is a proposed 200-metre leisure-and-observation tower planned for a site off Curzon Street next to Millennium Point, Eastside.

It will feature a 110-metre observation gallery, a 190-metre platform, external glass lifts, wall-climbing observation pods and a slow-revolving gyro-glass tower.

Visitors will be able to sky jump, bungee jump and walk on a ledge around the tower without a handrail (but with a safety harness).

The base will contain a leisure park with bars, cafes, retail outlets, restaurants, three rides, a climbing wall, and 260-room hotel.

Birmingham City University

Birmingham City University had intended to build a new campus on a 4.1-acre site between Park Street and New Canal Street.

It would have contained new buildings for the Conservatoire, the Adrian Boult Hall and the Birmingham Institute of Art & Design.

However, the designated site is now required for a high-speed railway station and so the new campus will be built on a smaller alternative site next to Millennium Point. It will contain just one building for the Institute of Art and Design. Plans were submitted in February 2011 (News Archive 07/02/11).

HS2 Terminal: Curzon Street Station

A high-speed rail terminal (map) will be built between Park Street and New Canal Street.

The main entrance will be on the west side, by Moor Street Station, with a second entrance on the east side, by the historic Curzon Street Station.

The new station will contain 3 island platforms with 6 platform faces; each face will be 415 metres long and 10 metres wide; the platforms will bridge existing roads.

The concourse will be one level above the platforms; escalators, lifts and travelators will provide full access.

Construction will take 4-5 years and is unlikely to begin before 2018.

HS2: Eastside

HS2 (map) will run through Eastside to the proposed Curzon Street Terminal.

The high-speed track will be on the north side of the existing cross-city line.

Most of the required land is derelict; however, Curzon Gate student village, which was only completed in 2008, may have to be demolished.

Birmingham Ormiston Academy

The Ormiston Academy has recently been constructed on Grosvenor Street, next to Millennium Point, Eastside.

It will be attended by around 350 students aged 14-19 and will specialise in digital media and the creative and performing arts.

Work began in December 2010 and was completed in August 2011.

Phase one, which is now complete, contains 748 student flats managed by UNITE.

These flats may have to be demolished to make room for HS2.

La Tour Hotel
