Overview: Birmingham has a surprisingly large number of green spaces ranging from botanical gardens, urban parks, recreation grounds and village greens to the green corridors that straddle its rivers and canals and the belts of undeveloped farmland that have been preserved as country parks.

There are also rivers, waterways and numerous artificial lakes that were created in order to power water mills, collect drinking-water or feed canals.
