It is flanked by Aston, Birchfield, Eastside, Hockley, Lozells, the Gun Quarter and Business Quarter.

It was first developed as a gentrified "new town" in the 1790's but was industrialised in the early 19th century.

Victorian slums were replaced by council estates in the 1960's and an industrial zone divided housing from the city centre.

Newtown is now characterised by a mid-20th-century industrial townscape alongside a belt of multi-occupancy housing, including 19 tower blocks.
