31.12.10 Pickpocket Arrested at Frankfurt Market
 
An off-duty policeman has arrested a 21-year-old pickpocket at the Frankfurt Market on Victoria Square in Birmingham city centre; the thief had "accidentally stumbled" into a shopper in order to steal his wallet.
 
31.12.10 Drugs Raid in Bordesley Green
 
The police discovered class A drugs and 30 cannabis plants during a raid at a house on Denville Crescent in Bordesley Green on Thursday 30 December. A 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drug dealing.
 
30.12.10 MG Will Launch New Saloon in 2011
 
The MG assembly plant in Longbridge will launch a new sports saloon car costing less than £20,000 in 2011. It will be marketed as an affordable alternative to similar Audi and BMW models. The company will also launch the MG6 hatchback in March 2011. 39 UK dealers now hold an MG franchise; the company employs 400 staff and is currently recruiting marketing people.
 
30.12.10 Small Heath Man Jailed for Manslaughter
 
A 29-year-old man from has been jailed for 9.5 years for manslaughter after he admitted stabbing a childhood friend to death during an argument about a missing camcorder at his home on Oldknow Road in Small Heath during the early hours of Sunday 14th March 2010.
 
29.12.10 New Long Haul Destinations from Brum via Paris
 
Flybe will offer six daily flights from Birmingham to Paris Charles de Gaulle in collaboration with Air France who will provide connecting flights to 14 new long-haul destinations including Freetown in Sierra Leone and Monrovia in Liberia.
 
29.12.10 Criminals Targeted By License Plate Recognition
 
Police have been monitoring license plate recognition cameras from a central control suite in order to intercept vehicles linked to known criminals/suspects as they travel through Birmingham. 58 suspects have been arrested for a variety of crimes including firearms and drug offences and 98 cars have been seized from uninsured drivers.
 
29.12.10 Teenage Girl Hit By Car in Witton
 
An 18-year-old girl was hospitalised with life-threatening injuries after she was hit by a car on Wyrley Road in Witton at around 2.30pm on Friday 24 December 2010. A 39-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving.
 
28.12.10 Dead Body on Street in Spring Hill
 
The dead body of a 20 year-old man was found lying in snow on Ellen Street off Spring Hill at approximately 7am on Monday 27 December.
 
28.12.10 New Rail Bridge in Selly Oak
 
A new 3,800 tonne rail bridge was installed on the Cross City Line in Selly Oak on Boxing Day. The bridge will carry the line above the Selly Oak Bypass (Selly Oak New Road) which is currently being built in order to relieve congestion on the Bristol Road.
 
28.12.10 Kitchen Fire at Digbeth Hostel
 
Fire crews attended a kitchen blaze at a men's hostel on Bradford Street in Digbeth at approximately 3.30pm on Thursday 23 December.
 
27.12.10 TV Sparks Blaze in Kingstanding
 
A faulty TV caused a fire at a house on Finchley Road in Kingstanding at around 4am on Boxing Day. The occupants, a 39-year-old woman and her teenage son, escaped the blaze after they were alerted by smoke alarms.
 
27.12.10 Car Hits Tree in Hall Green
 
A car hit a tree on Highfield Road in Hall Green at roughly 2pm on Christmas Day. The driver, a man in his twenties, was hospitalised with head and neck injuries.
 
27.12.10 House Blaze in Small Heath
 
3 adults and 5 children were hospitalised after they inhaled smoke during a fire in the front living room of a terraced house on Whitmore Road in Small Heath at around 11am on Boxing Day.
 
26.12.10 Gang Violence at Bullring Shopping Centre
 
Gangs of youths fought running battles in and around the Bullring Shopping Centre on Boxing Day. Armed police attended after a 19-year-old man was shot in the leg outside Mango on the Middle Level of the East Mall at approximately 2.20pm. A second man was stabbed in the face.
 
26.12.10 Underground Cannabis Farmers Jailed
 
A 23-year-old man has been jailed for 2 years, and his 24 year-old and 25 year-old brothers have each been jailed for 22 months, in connection with the underground cultivation of cannabis in the Erdington area of Birmingham. The men cultivated the drug in water-proof brick-lined tunnels accessed through shafts beneath garden sheds at various addresses in Erdington. They were arrested after police were tipped-off in December 2009.
 
25.12.10 Boxing Day Charity Walk in Sutton Park
 
The 23rd annual Sutton Park Charity Dog Walk in aid of Birmingham Dogs Home will start from the Visitor Centre on Park Road at 10.30am.
 
25.12.10 New Building for George Dixon School
 
The Planning Committee has approved a new two-storey building with a sports hall, library and art rooms at George Dixon Primary School on City Road in Edgbaston.
 
24.12.10 Teenager Cleared of Sparkbrook Screwdriver Murder
 
A jury at Birmingham Crown Court has found a 16 year-old boy not guilty of the murder of a 24 year-old man who was stabbed in the head with a screwdriver at Larches Green Park in Sparkbrook on Friday 12 March 2010. The boy claimed that the injury was caused accidentally during a struggle whilst he was defending some girls who had seen the deceased urinate in the park.
 
24.12.10 New Street Station Pickpocket Jailed
 
A 50-year-old pickpocket has been jailed for 3.5 years in connection with a series of thefts, most of which were committed at New Street Station between April and November 2009. He memorised the PIN numbers of elderly rail passengers using bank cards to pay for tickets at self-service machines and then contrived to bump into his victims, normally whilst boarding their trains, so that he could steal their purses/wallets.
 
23.12.10 New Morrison's Store Approved for Edgbaston
 
The Planning Committee has approved revised plans for a Morrison's superstore at the Edgbaston Shopping Centre in Five Ways. A previous application was rejected as unsuitable for a key gateway site. The store will create 114 full-time and 189 part-time jobs.
 
23.12.10 Bullring Spiral Cafe to be Replaced by Restaurants
 
The spiral cafe at St Martins Square in the Bullring will be removed to make room for 3 new eateries alongside an extended viewing platform. The awarding-winning cafe, whose spiral design resembles a snail's shell, will probably be demolished rather than dismantled and reassembled elsewhere.
 
22.12.10 Parent Dies Outside Hollyfield School
 
A 42-year-old parent collapsed and died of a blood clot in the lungs (aneurism) outside Hollyfield Primary School in the Reddicap area of Sutton Coldfield whilst collecting his 9-year-old son on Monday 6 December.
 
22.12.10 Sutton Coldfield Postie Hoarded Undelivered Mail
 
A 43-year-old postman, employed at Sutton Coldfield delivery office for over 6 years, hoarded 2,335 letters and 6,500 packets at his home on Witton Lodge Road in Erdington between July 2008 and July 2010 because he could not keep up with his rounds. He pleaded guilty to delaying and destroying postal packets at Birmingham Crown Court and was sentenced to 8 months jail suspended for 2 years and ordered to perform 120 hours unpaid work.
 
21.12.10 Emirates Jet Stuck in Sludge at Brum Airport
 
An Emirates Boeing 777 with 282 passengers, which was diverted from Heathrow to Birmingham, landed safely at around 2pm this afternoon but then taxied off the runway and became stuck in sludge. The incident does not appear to be weather-related.
 
21.12.10 Arsonists Burn Allotment Shed in Erdington
 
Arsonists have set fire to a shed on the Birches Green Allotments in Erdington. This is the latest incident in a pattern of theft and vandalism that has included 15 break-ins during the past 3 months.
 
21.12.10 Thief Impersonates Courier to Rob Store
 
A thief in his late twenties posed as a courier in order to steal 49 mobile phones from the Voicemobile store at the Fort Shopping Park in the Tyburn area of Erdington at roughly 5pm on Thursday 16 December.
 
20.12.10 Man Beaten Unconscious at Reflex Nightclub
 
Police are still attempting to trace a suspect in connection with an assault on a 31-year-old man at the Reflex nightclub on Hurst Street at roughly 1am on Sunday 10 October 2010. The victim, who was beaten unconsciousness, sustained a fractured skull.
 
20.12.10 High Speed Rail: London-Birmingham in 49 minutes
 
The Secretary of State for Transport, Phillip Hammond, has confirmed plans for a high-speed rail link between London and Birmingham that will reduce journey times from around 1 hour 20 minutes to 49 minutes. New high-speed stations will be built on Fazeley Street in the Eastside area of central Birmingham and at Birmingham Airport. The line will eventually be extended to Leeds. Public consultation will begin in February 2011.
 
20.12.10 Bus Crash in Balsall Heath
 
A bus collided with a car on Moseley Road in Balsall Heath on the morning of Monday 20 December. There were long delays and traffic was diverted via Edward Street.
 
19.12.10 Cash Box Robbery in Yardley
 
A security guard collecting cash from Farmfoods on the Coventry Road in Yardley was robbed at around 1.20pm on Thursday 16 December. The thief escaped in a getaway car driven by an accomplice. Two 22 year-old men, whose vehicle was involved in a collision, were subsequently arrested on Amington Road in Tyseley.
 
19.12.10 Attempted Cash Box Robbery in Sheldon
 
A 21-year-old man from Sparkhill attempted to rob a security guard delivering a cash box to Lloyds TSB on the Coventry Road in Sheldon on Thursday 16 December. The thief was overpowered by members of the public and arrested by the police.
 
19.12.10 Bus Crash in Kings Norton
 
A number 11 bus hit a lamp post on the Pershore Road in Kings Norton after the driver suffered a suspected heart attack at around 3pm on Friday 17 December. An elderly passenger was hospitalised with serious leg injuries.
 
18.12.10 Female Burglars Target Sutton Coldfield OAPS
 
Two female burglars have been masquerading as nurses and/or social workers in order to enter elderly people's homes and steal cash and valuables. 5 incidents have been reported since August in Sutton Coldfield and Kingstanding.
 
18.12.10 Magistrates ASBO Girl Gangster
 
Birmingham Magistrates have issued an ASBO against a 17 year-old girl from Arthur Street in Small Heath after hearing evidence that she is a key member of the notorious B515 street gang.
 
18.12.10 Prince Charles To Unveil Edward VII Memorial
 
Prince Charles will unveil a statue of Edward VII that has been restored after years of neglect in Centenary Square on Wednesday 22 December. The statue, which was created by Albert Toft in 1913, formerly stood in Victoria Square and Highgate Park.
 
17.12.10 Homeless Housed in Squalid Bed and Breakfasts
 
On-the-spot inspections of bed and breakfast accommodation for the homeless in Birmingham during October and November have revealed squalid conditions including a lack of hot water, heating and cooking facilities, damp and vermin. Birmingham City Council currently houses 150 individuals and families in bed and breakfasts.
 
17.12.10 Radio WM Audience Hits Record Low
 
The listener figures for BBC Radio WM, which broadcasts from the Mailbox, have hit a record low. Only 190,000 people tuned into the station each week during the period April-September 2010. The station now has a market share of only 4.6%.
 
17.12.10 Man Dies in Chester Road Crash
 
A motorist died after his car collided with a lorry on the Chester Road in Erdington at roughly 11.30am on Thursday 16 December.
 
16.12.10 Stockland Green Murderer Jailed
 
A 43-year-old man from Tipton has been jailed for a minimum of 27 years at Birmingham Crown Court after being convicted of the pre-meditated murder of the mother of his former fiancée at her home on Mere Road in the Stockland Green area of Erdington on Friday 7 May 2010. The 59-year-old victim was stabbed at least 60 times, 4 days after her daughter had cancelled her wedding.
 
16.12.10 Lack of Public Support for CCTV in Moseley
 
190 out of 358 local residents (roughly 53%), who responded to a public consultation exercise regarding the installation of CCTV surveillance in Moseley, did not support the plan.

9 men have been charged with violent disorder in connection with crowd trouble at Villa Park during the Premiership derby match between Birmingham City and Aston Villa on 31/10/10
 
15.12.10 Police Hunt Soho Road Robber
 
The police are still attempting to trace a 38-year-old man in connection with a robbery that occurred in Handsworth on Thursday 1 July 2010. Two armed men stole cash and bank cards from their 47-year-old victim on the Soho Road and then raided his home.
 
15.12.10 Kingsway Cinema Restaurant Conversion Refused
 
The Planning Committee has refused an application to convert the Kingsway Cinema on Kings Heath High Street into a 700-cover Chinese restaurant and banqueting suite due to inadequate parking and the likelihood of increased traffic congestion.
 
15.12.10 Police Seize Loaded Pistol in Southside
 
The police seized an illegally converted Miami 92F pistol, loaded with 4 bullets, on Bromsgrove Street in the Southside area of central Birmingham at around 12 noon on Friday 10 December. The pistol was apparently discarded by 4 men travelling in a vehicle that officers had followed from Handsworth.
 
14.12.10 New Floodlights at Edgbaston Cricket Ground
 
Two out of five new floodlights have been installed at the Warwickshire Country Cricket Ground in Edgbaston. Some local residents object to the floodlights on the basis that they are an eyesore and detract from the parkland character of the surrounding area.
 
14.12.10 Female Biker Injured on Aston Expressway
 
A female motorcyclist collided with two other vehicles on the northbound carriageway of the A38(M) Aston Expressway at around 6pm on Monday 13 December. She was hospitalised with non-life-threatening injuries.
 
14.12.10 Police Raid Cannabis Farm in Tyburn
 
The police raided a cannabis farm hidden in the basement of a self-storage warehouse on the Tyburn Road on 20 November. They seized 300 cannabis plants and arrested a 42-year-old man.
 
13.12.10 Sculptor William Bloye Honoured by Blue Plaque
 
The sculptor William Bloye (1890-1975) has been honoured by a blue plaque at the site of his former studio on the Golden Hillock Campus of City College.
 
13.12.10 Opposition to Tesco Moseley Store
 
A public meeting, attended by around 200 people, has been held at St Columba's Church Hall in Moseley to discuss the planned Tesco store at the former Ford Meteor site on St Mary's Row. Opponents succeeded in stalling the project pending further investigation into the likely impact on traffic flows.
 
13.12.10 Localism Bill Will Appoint Shadow Mayor
 
The Leader of the City Council, Mike Whitby, will become the Shadow Mayor of Birmingham under the Localism Bill unveiled in the House of Commons today. If the mayoral system is approved by a local referendum in May 2012, the first election for a Mayor of Birmingham will be held in May 2013.

The dead body of an unidentified man was discovered on the Birmingham-Walsall Railway, between Perry Barr and Hamstead Stations, at around 7pm on Friday 10 December.
 
12.12.10 Two New Platforms at Moor Street Station
 
Two new platforms have opened at Moor Street Station as part of the upgrade to the London-Birmingham Chiltern Line which should reduce journey times to the capital from 2 hours 10 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes.

Police seized over 1kg of a substance believed to be heroin from a vehicle parked outside a house on Monkswell Close in Small Heath on Friday 10 December.

A 26-year-old man sustained head injuries when he was battered by a stranger with an iron scaffolding bar outside Fairbourne Tower on Portfield Grove in Erdington at roughly 4pm on Sunday 21 November.

A 39-year-old man from Ruddington Way in Newtown has been jailed for 20 weeks at Birmingham Magistrates Court for, amongst other things, smashing the windows of two police cars with an axe on 24 September 2010.

Robbers stole a substantial quantity of cash from a security guard as he was making a delivery to Lloyds TSB on Pershore Road in Stirchley on Monday 6 December.

Two men in their mid-twenties robbed a security guard of a cashbox that he was delivering to NatWest on the Stratford Road in Sparkhill at roughly 10am on Tuesday 7 December.

A man in his fifties, who has been missing for 3 months, was found dead at his home in Perry Barr on Monday 6 December.
 
09.12.10 Shot Spotter Censors in Handsworth and Lozells
 
Police have installed shot spotter censors in Handsworth and Lozells that will alert them within 12 seconds of a gun being fired and indicate the number of guns fired, the calibre and trajectory of their bullets and the location from which they were fired. Marksmen have conducted live-firing sessions to calibrate the censors.

A 12 year-old boy has sustained serious head and leg injuries after being hit by a car on Orphanage Road in Erdington at around 3pm on Tuesday 7 December.
 
08.12.10 Fire Alarm Causes New Street Station Shutdown
 
New Street Station was evacuated for 20 minutes on Tuesday 7 December after a fire alarm sounded. A similar incident occurred on Wednesday 10 November when the station was shut down for 1 hour (News Archive 10/11/10).
 
08.12.10 Student Demo at Birmingham MP's Office
 
7 students staged a 3 hour sit-in at the constituency office of Liberal Democrat MP John Hemming on the Coventry Road in Yardley on Tuesday 7 December. Mr Hemming, who represents Birmingham Yardley, signed a pre-election pledge to oppose increased tuition fees.

A suspected arson attack damaged two cars on Floyer Road in Small Heath at around 6am on Monday 6 December.

Planners have approved a new three-level superstore with a surface area of 107,000 square feet at the former Severn Trent offices and Focus DIY sites on the Coventry Road in Sheldon. The superstore, possibly a Sainsbury's, will be built on stilts above an existing 544-space car park.

A 22-year-old man died in a two car collision at the junction of Holland Road and Birmingham Road in Sutton Coldfield at roughly 2.30am on Sunday 5 December.

Racist graffiti was scrawled on the wall of a derelict pub on Ravenhurst Street, in full view of Camp Hill Circus, between Friday 03/12/10 and Sunday 05/12/10.
 
06.12.10 Work Begins on Grove Centre Refurbishment
 
Work has started on a £25,000 refurbishment of the Grove Community Centre on Arthur Road in Handsworth. The centre, which is run as a voluntary organisation, has provided support, recreation and leisure facilities for children aged under 13 since 1994.
 
06.12.10 Work Begins on Birmingham Fame Academy
 
Work has started on the construction of the £25 million Ormiston Academy next to Millennium Point in the Eastside area of central Birmingham. The academy, which will be modelled on the BRIT showbiz school in London, will teach digital media and the creative and performing arts. The facilities will include 4 dance studios, 6 rehearsal rooms, a 300-seat theatre, TV studio and outdoor amphitheatre. The first students will be enrolled in September 2011.

It appears that John Lewis may be negotiating for an anchor site in the new retail development that will replace the Pallasades shopping centre as part of the Gateway regeneration of New Street Station.

Around 300 people raised money for the homeless by participating in the 21st annual sponsored sleep-out at St Basil's on Heath Mill Lane in Digbeth on Friday 3rd/Saturday 4th December.
 
04.12.10 Gang Jailed for Mugging OAP Bus Passengers
 
Three men aged 46, 41 and 34 have each been jailed for two years, and two men aged 40 and 33 for 18 months, for offences relating to the mugging of elderly passengers travelling through the Soho corridor on the number 74 and 79 bus routes.
 
04.12.10 Duke Street Chapel to be Rebuilt
 
Planning permission has been granted for Duke Street Chapel in Sutton Coldfield town centre to be rebuilt with additional front and rear extensions. The chapel is an independent church affiliated to the Evangelical Alliance. Its Edwardian church hall (circa 1906) will be retained.

A woman in her thirties sustained head injuries after apparently being hit by a car on Watery Lane in Bordesley at around 3pm on Friday 3 December. She was airlifted to QE Hospital.
 
03.12.10 Newhall Hill Sex Attacker Jailed
 
A 43-year-old man who randomly attacked and sexually assaulted a woman on Newhall Hill in the Jewellery Quarter in broad daylight has been jailed for 4.5 years at Birmingham Crown Court. His victim was rescued by passers-by.
 
03.12.10 Pensioner Mugged on Small Heath Bypass
 
A 72-year-old pensioner was mugged and punched in the face by two men on Small Heath Highway on the morning of Wednesday 1 December. The thieves escaped with £400 cash that she had collected for members of Sheldon Heath Social Club.
 
03.12.10 Police Recommend Removal of Ring of Steel
 
Chris Sims, the Chief Constable of West Midlands Police, has recommended that a controversial ring of spy cameras in inner east Birmingham, sometimes referred to as the Birmingham Ring of Steel, should be removed. The cameras were switched off following complaints by residents and the police have already apologised for failing to consult local communities.
 
02.12.10 Football Violence at Saint Andrews
 
Seven members of the public, three policemen and three stewards were injured during public disorder and a pitch invasion at Saint Andrews football stadium after Birmingham City beat Aston Villa in the Carling Cup on Wednesday 1 December.

Work has started on the construction of a £27 million urban village in Shard End that will include a community library with a shard-shaped facade, 191 flats and houses, and a new retail centre.
 
02.12.10: Police Raid Cannabis Farm in Handsworth
 
The police raided a cannabis farm in the loft and cellar of a house on Church Vale in Handworth during the early hours of Wednesday 1 December. A 16 year-old boy discovered at the property was arrested.
 
02.12.10: Ice Rink Opens on Pershore Street
 
Leisurebox has opened a full-size ice rink on Pershore Street in the Southside area of central Birmingham. The venue also contains a 24-lane bowling alley, golf and flight stimulators and an amusement arcade.
 
01.12.10: Garden Grabbing in Moseley Village
 
Planning permission has been obtained for a row of five small terraced houses on garden plots, previously used as a builder's yard, behind 5-7 Park Hill in Moseley Village.
 
01.12.10: Students Demonstrate in Council Chamber
 
Around 60 people, most of whom appeared to be students, invaded the Council House on Victoria Square on Monday 30th November and staged a protest in the Chamber against increased tuition fees and public sector cuts.
 
01.12.10: Drugs Raid in Handsworth
 
Police launched a dawn raid on a  house on Douglas Road in Handsworth following complaints of drug dealing by local residents. They discovered 30 wraps of crack cocaine and a cannabis plant. A man in his twenties has been arrested.
