administrative ward.

Nechells is named after a mediaeval land conveyance ("atten
echells") which transferred it from Handsworth to Aston Manor.
Nechells consists of a sandstone ridge flanked by two river
valleys: the Hockley Brook and River Rea.
Nechells remained largely rural until the 19th century when
canals were cut through the river valleys and the Grand Junction
Railway arrived.
Industrial corridors developed alongside the transport routes
and the ridge became slum housing.
The slums were replaced by council estates in 1950-1970.
The area is still characterised by older tower clusters,
bunglaows, flats and maisonettes with an increasing proportion
of modern homes.
