Aston Manor Road Transport Museum is located in a former tram
depot on Witton Lane, Aston.
It contains a collection of
buses, trams and commercial vehicles that were either used or
manufactured in the Midlands. The oldest exhibit is a Birmingham
Corporation tramcar made by the United Electric Car Company of
Preston in 1907.
There is a small admission charge which is increased on
events days. The facilities include a shop, cafe, toilets and
free parking.
This museum is at risk of closure because the council, which
owns the depot, has demanded £43,000 annual rent. The museum
claims that it cannot afford the rent but has offered to buy the
building for £250,000; however, the council's asking price is
£900,000
(News Headlines 27/08/11). The council served a notice to
quit in August 2011 after apparently receiving an offer of
£900,000 from a developer who wishes to convert the museum into
an Asian banqueting and wedding centre
