Villa Cross is a crossroads in Lozells. It is the junction of
Villa Road,
Lozells
Road, Heathfield Road and Barker Street.
It was created when Lozells was originally laid out in the
1830's.
Seven members of the Villa Cross Wesleyan Chapel, formerly at
the corner of George Street and Lozells Road, formed Aston Villa
FC in 1874.
Villa Cross is characterised by pre-1919 terraced housing
with shop fronts on Villa Road.
The neo-classical Villa Cross Picture Palace was firebombed
in the Handsworth Riots of 1985 and the Villa Cross pub closed
shortly afterwards.
The Villa Cross Chapel was demolished in 2007 and replaced by
the
New Testament Church of God. |
