Lozells is in the
Lozells
and East Handsworth ward. It is flanked by
Birchfield,
Handsworth,
Hockley,
Newtown and
Soho.
And is named after Lorres Hill at the junction of Lozells
Road and Wheeler Street.
Lozells was common wasteland until the 1830's when it was
developed as a high-density residential suburb.
It is characterised by pre-1919 terraces with landmark
Victorian churches and surviving Georgian villas.
Unlike the neighbouring area of Newtown, its terraced houses
were well-built and did not share the same back walls.
Consequently, its Victorian townscape survived wholescale
post-war redevelopment.
