Prisons in Birmingham (Top Menu)

The following prisons are in Birmingham:

HMP Birmingham (Top Menu)

HMP Prison Birmingham is on Winson Green Road in the Winson Green area of west Birmingham. It is a category B local prison that receives adult male prisoners who have either been refused bail pending trial or who have been convicted and sentenced to a term of imprisonment following trial.

Prisoners are sent to Winson Green by the Crown and Magistrates Courts at Birmingham, Stafford & Wolverhampton and by the magistrates courts at Burton, Cannock, Lichfield, Tamworth, Rugeley, and Sutton Coldfield.

Prisoners generally do not stay long-term in Winson Green; once they are convicted they are usually dispersed to other prisons; the current capacity is around 1400.

The core buildings at Winson Green were designed by D.R.Hill on the Pentonville model and completed in 1849. They consist of four wings that radiate from a central tower. One contains offices and the other three cell blocks.

Each cell block consists of a long open hall with three floors of cells built into the side walls. The ground floor cells are called "the ones", the first floor cells, "the twos" and the second floor cells, "the threes". The "twos" and "threes" are reached by staircases and balconies.

The cells are approximately 4 metres long, 3 metres high and 2 metres wide. They are lit by narrow slits on the rear walls, some of which have been replaced by proper windows.

Each cell contains a toilet and washbasin and is occupied by two adult male prisoners who must wash and eat their meals there. Many prisoners spend up to twenty-three hours a day in their cells awaiting trial or dispersal to another gaol.

The prison campus has been extended beyond the core buildings in order to raise the operational capacity to 1402 and provide educational facilities, workshops, a gym and health centre.

However, most prisoners remain confined for at least 20 hours a day in cramped Victorian cells, infested with ants & cockroaches, and with poor toilet, ventilation, laundry, washing & eating facilities.
