Park Central
is a private-and-social housing estate in Lee Bank, Birmingham. It has
replaced the notorious Lee Bank council estate which was nicknamed
"Birmingham's Slum Quarter" in the 1990's.
The old council estate was transferred to Optima Housing Association
in 1999 who, in partnership with developers Crest Nicholson,
reconfigured the layout and virtually rebuilt the entire housing stock.
The new estate is centred on a newly-created 8-acre green space, the
Moonlit and Sunset Park, which contains wildflower meadows, playgrounds,
public sculpture and an events amphitheatre.
The new housing stock mainly consists of townhouses and low-rise
apartments; however, 7 tower blocks from the old council estate have
been retained and refurbished.
These include the 4 monoliths (Audleigh,
Chiswick,
Faraday,
Hogarth) on
Bell Barn Road which are a major landmark visible from Lee Bank
Middleway;
And three Y-shaped blocks (Avon,
Landsdown
and Nash) on
Great Colmore Street and Wynn Street.
The new residential units intersperse private and social housing in
order to avoid the "sink estate syndrome" that plagued the old council
estate.
Since Park Central is barely 750 metres from the city centre, it is
hoped that the new estate will attract a high proportion of well-paid
professionals.
