On-the-spot inspections were made of bed-and-breakfast accommodation for the homeless in Birmingham in October and November 2010. These inspections revealed squalid conditions, particularly damp, vermin and a lack of hot water, heating and cooking equipment (News Archive 17/12/10).

09.10.10 Council Terminates Asylum-Seeker Housing Contract

In October 2010, Birmingham City Council announced that it will not extend its five year contract with the UK Border Agency for the housing of asylum seekers; the current contract, under which 190 homes are currently occupied by asylum seekers, will expire in June 2011 (News Archive 09/10/10).

06.09.10: Over 4,000 Families Declare Themselves Homeless

In September 2010, charities warned that rough sleeping could dramatically increase in Birmingham because of council cuts in funding for hostels such as Saint Anne's in Digbeth, which has fifty-six beds for men aged over 25, and the Fireside Centre, which sheltered homeless alcoholics until it closed following grant cuts earlier this year.

However, council officials argue that increased investment in new hostels such as the Snow Hill Centre and the YMCA in Stockland Green will provide new beds and that overall funding for the homeless has increased (News Archive 28/09/10).

06.09.10: Over 4,000 Families Declare Themselves Homeless

4,415 families declared themselves homeless in the first six months of 2010. The council has responded to this crisis by renting 630 homes from private landlords; it will only use bed and breakfast accommodation in emergencies (News Archive 06/09/10).
