The post-war redevelopment of Birmingham involved the large-scale dispersal of established communities and the construction of 468 residential tower blocks, many of which were located in new fringe suburbs.

However, the stereotypical image of Birmingham as a concrete city of sink estates is unfair since there are numerous areas of low-density suburban housing whilst many residential towers have been demolished and replaced by a mix of low-rise social and private housing.
