Hockley is partly in the
Ladywood Administrative Ward and partly in the
Soho Administrative Ward.
It is flanked by the
Business Quarter,
Westside,
Ladywood,
Lozells,
Handsworth,
Newtown and
Winson Green.
Hockley is a corruption of Hocca's leah meaning a woodland
clearing belonging to Hocca.
It was traditionally an industrial area, particularly coin
and medal minting, jewellery and pen manufacture, electroplating
and printing.
The townscape features numerous Victorian red-brick workshops
and factories, many of which have been converted into apartments
and offices with the remainder having been cleared for new
industrial, commercial and housing developments.
Hockley contains the Jewellery Quarter, which still
manufactures 40% of UK all jewellery, and the
Golden Triangle,
which contains over 300 jewellery stores, showrooms, workshops
and factories.
Other attractions include an upmarket leisure and
entertainment quarter centred on
St Pauls Square.
Hockley also contains
Soho Hill where Mathew Boulton built the Soho Manufactory in
1763. His former home,
Soho
House, is now a museum.
