City Hospital is on Dudley Road, Winson Green. It is a general, accident and emergency hospital managed by
the Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust.
The core buildings originated as a workhouse in the 1840's and were
extended by 9 Nightingale wards in 1889.
The campus now contains an
array of modern and post-war buildings, including the Birmingham Treatment
Centre, the Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre, the Regional Gynaeoncology
Unit, the West Midlands Poison Unit & the Skin Centre.
In January 2010, it was announced that City Hospital will make
structural alterations costing around £1.5 million in order to eliminate
mixed wards
(News Report 31/10/10). In May 2011, the family of a 77-year-old
stroke patient complained that he had been battered by a fellow patient
with mental health issues whilst recuperating at City Hospital
