The University of Birmingham is an independent organisation with charitable status that operates under a Royal Charter granted by Queen Victoria in 1900.

The University Council is responsible for strategic policy, finance and assets; the Senate is responsible for academic work, policy and standards; the Executive Board, which is chaired by the Vice Chancellor, is responsible for the day-to-day running of the university.
