Digbeth is in the Nechells
ward in central Birmingham.
The surrounding areas are
Eastside,
Southside,
Bordesley,
Highgate and the
Retail Quarter.
Digbeth was part of mediaeval Birmingham and contained
numerous foundries, forges and tanneries powered by leats cut
from the River Rea.
Its name is a corruption of "dyke paeth" meaning a road
through watercourses.
These leats have been backfilled and the river channelled
through an underground culvert.
Digbeth now features an early-to-mid 20th century industrial
townscape.
It contains a belt of warehouses, workshops and factories
including
several niche manufacturers.
Some older industrial estate has been cleared or regenerated.
The former Bird's Custard Factory, for example, is now an
Arts & Media
Quarter and a new high-rise mixed-use development called the
Beorma Quarter is planned for the top of Digbeth High
Street.
Digbeth is also famous for its
Irish Quarter,
live music pubs and
coach station.
