Birmingham is the second most populous city in the UK after
London. Its population was 977,099 in 2001, 1,001,200 in 2005
and 1,028,000 in 2010. This upward trend has been caused by
greater migration, reduced death rates and higher birth rates.
Birmingham is a comparatively young city with an average age of
36 compared to 40 for London and 39 for the UK as a whole.
It is also the most ethnically diverse city in the UK
with an estimated non-white population of around 36% compared to
30.4% for London and 7.9% for the UK as a whole. In 2010, 20% of Brummies were born outside the UK and 14% outside the European
Union.
If current trends continue, Birmingham will become a plural
city without any majority ethnic group in 2024. |
