Overview Demographics: Birmingham is the second most populous city in the UK after London. The ONS estimated that its population was 1,001,200 in 2005, up from 977,099 since the 2001 census. The population in 2009 was probably around 1,028,000. These increases are explained by increased migration, reduced death rates and higher birth rates.

Birmingham is a comparatively young city with an average age of 36 compared to 40 for London and 39 for the UK as a whole. It is also the most ethnically diverse city in Britain with an estimated non-white population of around 34% compared to 30.4% for London and 7.9% for the UK as a whole.

According to the 2001 census, 16.5 % of residents in Birmingham were born outside the UK and 13.42% outside the European Union. Current estimates suggest these figures are now 20% and 14% respectively.

Birmingham will become a plural city - without any majority ethnic group - by 2024 iof these demographics trends continue.
