Insurers have estimated that stock worth £10 million was looted
from city centre stores during the riots of Monday 8th
and Tuesday 9th August 2011. Police suspect that street gangs
will sell the looted stock
on the black market and reinvest the proceeds in narcotics

Hundreds of masked youths looted shops in Birmingham city centre
for a second consecutive night on 9th/10th August 2011; gangs
congregated in the vicinity of St Phillips Cathedral and
attacked stores on Corporation Street; the police cordoned off
the Bullring but were outflanked when looters rampaged through
Dale End and onto the High Street; cars were torched on Albert
Street, Bordesley Street and Smallbrook Queensway. The police
made over 80 arrests.
Hundreds of masked youths looted bars, shops and restaurants in
the Bullring and on New Street during the night of 8th/9th
August 2011; the police attempted to seal the city centre by
closing arterial routes; officers formed a cordon outside the
Pallasades in order to protect New Street Station and the
Business Quarter; however, the mob outflanked them by rampaging
along the High Street towards Dale End where they burnt cars and
attempted to hijack a double decker bus; more than 30 people
were injured of whom 13 were hospitalised; the police made over
100 arrests.
Birmingham Magistrates banned a 61-year-old man from the
Bullring Shopping Centre in June 2011 after a security guard
caught him taking an "up skirt" photo of a female shopper
outside Madame Butterfly on the Middle Level.
A 22-year-old University of Birmingham student disguised himself
in a mask and wig, entered the ladies' toilets at the Bullring
Shopping Centre, took pictures of women's feet, and made sound
recordings of flushing lavatories. He was arrested on the
afternoon of Sunday 3rd April and subsequently admitted the
offence of observing a private act for sexual gratification at
Birmingham Magistrates Court.
On Boxing Day 2010, youths fought running battles in the
Bullring during which a 19-year-old man was shot in the leg
outside Mango on the Middle Level of the East Mall.
The police sealed Dale End on the evening of Saturday 13/11/10
after reports of gunmen brandishing weapons; the surrounding
area was combed by forensic experts.
The police warned in June 2010 that cashpoint muggers were
operating in pairs in Birmingham city centre; they wait until a
victim has inserted his/her card and PIN; one then distracts
and/or assaults the victim whilst the other completes the
withdrawal.
Five youths aged 14-17, thought to be part of the Slash Crew who
are mainly from Aston and Newtown, robbed a 15-year-old boy from
Handsworth in the Bullring on 15th November 2009; they also
forced their victim to strip and climb into a skip.
