Birmingham Magistrates Court is at the corner of Corporation Street and
Newton Street in the Business Quarter.
It was built by Aston Webb and Ingress Bell in red-brick & terracotta
in 1887-91 and is a grade-one-listed building whose foundation stone was
laid by Queen Victoria in 1887.
The facade features clay reliefs and sculptural
figures, including an enthroned Victoria above the central porch.
The interior contains a Great Hall with a hammer-beam ceiling, crown-shaped chandeliers, stained glass,
decorative putti and arcades with first-floor balconies. A
tunnel-vaulted passage with richly-decorated panelling leads to the
courtrooms.
A new magistrates court with 13 floors and 24 courtrooms
has been planned for Masshouse in Eastside; however, its construction
has been deferred due to budget cuts at the Ministry of Justice
(News Archive 29/05/10). |
