Designed in the Tudor-Gothic Style by Augustus Welby Pugin, it was built in red-brick with stone dressings in 1840.

It houses a community of nuns of the Sister of Mercy and contains a chapel, conference rooms and 14 single guestrooms.

It is a grade-II* listed building.
