It specialises in the treatment of allergies, general & occupational lung disease and tuberculosis. The hospital specialises, in particular, in transplantation, cardiac, liver & neonatal surgery and is the only UK hospital that performs intestinal transplants on children. The campus also contains a national burns unit, a regional centre for Cleft Lip & Palate, and a Child & Adolescent Mental Health Unit. The 10-storey hospital, which was built in 1963, is now outdated since it contains heavy concrete columns that cramp the facilities and prevent spatial reorganisation. The hospital provides urgent dental treatment to more than 100,000 patients each year, often on a walk-in basis. It is also a dental research centre with extensive lab facilities and trains undergraduate & postgraduate dental students in partnership with the University of Birmingham. The hospital also operates an outreach clinic in Boots at 66 High Street in the Retail Quarter of central Birmingham (map). It was announced in January 2010 that a new dental hospital could open by 2014. However, additional government funding is required.
