The Barberry on Vincent Drive in the Metchley area of Edgbaston is a 34-bed specialist unit for women with pregnancy-related mental health issues; it also treats eating disorders; the unit is managed by the Birmingham & Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.

Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre (Index)

The Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre is on the campus of the City Hospital on Dudley Road in Winson Green; it was founded as the Birmingham Eye Hospital in 1823 and was previously based in a grandiose Victorian building, now a hotel, on Church Street in the Business Quarter.

The centre is operated by the Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust; it employs more than 30 consultants and specialises in areas such as orthoptics, glaucoma, retinal & lid surgery.

Birmingham Chest Clinic (Index)

The Birmingham Chest Clinic on Great Charles Street in the Jewellery Quarter is managed by the Heart of England NHS Trust. It specialises in the treatment of allergies, general & occupational lung disease and tuberculosis. It also offers chest x-rays, sexual health services, thoracic surgery and rapid access for suspected cases of lung cancer.

Birmingham Children's Hospital - formerly The Diana Princess of Wales Children's Hospital - is on Steelhouse Lane in the Gun Quarter; it is managed by the Birmingham Children's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and is the leading paediatric hospital in the Midlands; some highly specialist services are also provided on a national & supra-national basis.

The hospital specialises, in particular, in transplantation, cardiac, liver & neonatal surgery and is the only UK hospital that performs intestinal transplants on children. The campus also contains a national burns unit, a regional centre for Cleft Lip & Palate, and a Child & Adolescent Mental Health Unit.

 Lone nurses walking between the hospital and city centre car parks have been harassed. Nightshift nurses have been advised to arrive and depart in groups (News Archive 11/03/10).

Birmingham Dental Hospital (Index)

 Birmingham Dental Hospital is on Whittal Street in the Gun Quarter; it is managed by the South Birmingham Primary Care Trust. The 10-storey hospital, which was built in 1963, is now outdated since it contains heavy concrete columns that cramp the facilities and prevent spatial reorganisation.

The hospital provides urgent dental treatment to more than 100,000 patients each year, often on a walk-in basis. It is also a dental research centre with extensive lab facilities and trains undergraduate & postgraduate dental students in partnership with the University of Birmingham.

The hospital also operates an outreach clinic in Boots at 66 High Street in the Retail Quarter of central Birmingham (map).

It was announced in January 2010 that a new dental hospital could open by 2014. However, additional government funding is required.

The new hospital would be built at a different location, possibly Pebble Mill in Edgbaston or the Battery Park in Selly Oak (News Archive 25/01/10).

Birmingham Women's Hospital (Index)

Birmingham Women's Hospital is a specialist hospital operated by Birmingham Women's NHS Foundation Trust; it is located on Metchley Park Road in the Metchley area of Edgbaston.

The hospital, which was founded in 1968, contains  birth & neonatal units; it provides in- and out-patient services for women & babies in specialist fields such as gynaecology, urogynaecology, fertility & genetics. It also treats menstrual disorders, prolapse & continence problems, hormone & menopausal disorders & gynaecological cancers.

The campus includes the West Midlands Regional Genetics Service, the National Genetics Education Service, the West Midlands Cancer Intelligence Unit & the West Midlands Public Health Observatory.

The BMI Priory is a private 111-bed hospital on Priory Road in the Calthorpe area of Edgbaston; it is owned by BMI Healthcare: the largest independent provider of acute surgical services in the UK.

The core buildings originated as a workhouse in the 1840's and were extended by 9 Nightingale wards in 1889. The Good Hope Hospital is an accident, emergency and general hospital managed by the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust on Rectory Road in Sutton Coldfield Town. It originated as a country house that was converted into a convalescent home during the Second World War. Most of the campus now consists of post-war or modern buildings. The hospital teaches third year medical students in partnership with the University of Birmingham Medical School.

Heartlands Hospital on Bordesley Green East is an accident, emergency and general hospital managed by the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust. It originated as a tuberculosis and diphtheria clinic in 1895 but is now one of the largest hospitals in the UK; the accident and emergency unit is the busiest in Birmingham, treating over 80,000 patients annually.

Moseley Hall Hospital is on the Alcester Road in Moseley Village; it is a geriatric unit managed by the South Birmingham Primary Care Trust. The core building is a converted 18th century manor, once owned by Richard Cadbury; part of the hospital is being redeveloped as a 54-bed geriatric mental health unit for the Birmingham & Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.

Oleaster (Index)

The Oleaster is a 64-bed psychiatric unit on Middleton Crescent in the Metchley area of Edgbaston: it forms part of the National Centre for Mental Health and is named after a flowering shrub whose leaves possess healing qualities.

 The unit, which opened in 2008, replaced the Queen Elizabeth Psychiatric Hospital; it is managed by the Birmingham & Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Index)

Queen Elizabeth Hospital is a general, accident and emergency hospital managed by the University NHS Foundation Trust on Vincent Drive in the Metchley area of Edgbaston.

The QE is a major centre for the treatment of cancer and the transplantation of hearts, lungs and livers; it contains a specialist renal transplant centre and is the main teaching hospital for the University of Birmingham Medical School.

The hospital is currently completing a rebuilding programme that will provide additional space for the transfer of departments from Selly Oak.

Royal Centre for Defence Medicine (Index)

The Royal Centre for Defence Medicine is based at Selly Oak Hospital; it opened in 2001 following the controversial closure of specialist military hospitals and provides specialist & secondary care to members of the armed forces and medical support for military operations.

The centre is managed by the University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Although military staff are employed, injured servicemen are often treated in civilian surroundings, sometimes on open wards where they have occasionally been berated by opponents of the Afghan war.

Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (Index)

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital is on Bristol Road South in Northfield Town; it is managed by the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The hospital was established in 1817 and granted a royal warrant by Queen Victoria in 1888. The present site, known as Woodlands, was donated by George Cadbury in 1909.

The Royal Orthopaedic specialises in elective orthopaedic surgery and provides three tiers of service: routine orthopaedic operations for Birmingham & Worcestershire, spinal surgery & other specialist services for the West Midlands; and bone tumour surgery for the Midlands & North.

Selly Oak Hospital is a general, accident and emergency hospital managed by the University NHS Foundation Trust on Raddlebarn Road in Selly Oak. It contains the Centre for Defence Medicine and one of the leading burns units in the UK.

However, many of its departments will soon be transferred to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in the Metchley area of Edgbaston which has recently completed a massive rebuilding programme.

West Midlands Poisons Unit (Index)

The West Midlands Poisons Unit is at City Hospital on Dudley Road in Winson Green; it provides specialist treatment for acute & chronic poisoning and a toxicology advisory service for outpatients.

The unit is managed by the Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust; it treats 1200 patients annually, including alcoholics & substance abusers; research is conducted in partnership with the West Midlands Toxicology Laboratory.

Whittal Street Clinic (Index)

The Whittal Street Clinic is an NHS sexual health clinic in the Gun Quarter; it provides sexual health services including contraception, HIV testing & screening for sexually transmitted infections; patients are either referred by their GP or attend on their own initiative; there an outreach clinic at the Soho Health Centre on Louise Road in Handsworth.
