Edgbaston Hospital is on Somerset Road in the Metchley area of Edgbaston; it is a 45-bed private hospital owned by BMI Healthcare: the largest independent provider of acute surgical services in the UK.

The hospital offers a broad range of treatments such as general surgery, cosmetic surgery, orthopaedic surgery, fertility, gynaecology, neurology, urology, rheumatology, sexual medicine, sports medicine & pain management etc.

The facilities include three operating theatres & a minor operations/endoscopy suite. The ensuite patient rooms are equipped with satellite TV & telephones. Resident medical officers & nursing teams are on duty 24/7.

Good Hope Hospital (Top)
 
Good Hope Hospital is an accident, emergency and general hospital on Rectory Road in Sutton Coldfield Town.

The hospital, which is managed by the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust, was originally a country house that was converted into a convalescent home during the Second World War. Most of the buildings are now post-war/modern.

The hospital teaches third year medical students in partnership with the University of Birmingham Medical School.

There was a bomb scare in the A & E Department of this hospital on Tuesday 23/11/10. A bomb disposal unit carried out a controlled explosion in the toilet block (News Archive 24/11/10).

An 80-year-old woman died at Good Hope Hospital on 14/03/10 after being given ten times the prescribed level of potassium chloride (News Archive 24/02/11).

In March 2011, all but 3 wards were closed to new patients following an outbreak of the norovirus winter vomiting bug (News Archive 24/03/11).l

A new £23.5 million ward block containing 88 beds opened at Good Hope Hospital in May 2011. It is equipped with intensive and critical care facilities for heart, stroke and elderly patients. The A&E department is also being refurbished at an estimated cost of £5 million; two new operating theatres for keyhole surgery will be installed (News Headlines 26/05/11).

In September 2011, a 31-year-old woman complained that she was turned away without examination from the Maternity Unit at Good Hope Hospital less than an hour before giving birth to a baby girl on the roadside in Wylde Green (News Headlines 28/09/11).

Heartlands Hospital on Bordesley Green East is an accident, emergency and general hospital managed by the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust.

It originated as a tuberculosis and diphtheria clinic in 1895 but is now one of the largest hospitals in the UK; the accident and emergency unit is the busiest in Birmingham, treating over 80,000 patients annually.

The Heart of England NHS Trust paid substantial compensation to the parents of a baby boy who died at Heartlands Hospital following a delay in the performance of a caesarean section (News Archive 09/02/11).

The Health Services Ombudsman criticised Heartlands Hospital for discharging an 88-year-old female patient in urine-soaked clothes fastened with paper clips (News Archive 17/02/11)

A newborn baby boy was abducted from Heartlands Hospital on Monday 27th June 2011 (News Headlines 08/07/11).

Doctors failed to diagnose that an 82-year-old accident victim had broken her hip for 5 days after she was admitted to Heartlands Hospital (News Headlines 17/07/11).

Highcroft Hospital (Top)
 
Highcroft Hospital is a former psychiatric hospital in the Stockland Green area of Erdington.

The hospital has closed and been partially redeveloped as housing; however, several psychiatric wards are still located on the Highcroft site. These are generally managed as small independent units in order to avoid the stigma usually associated with larger mental health institutions.

The following psychiatric units are located on the Highcroft site: Eden Unit, Endeavour Court, Endeavour House, Forward House, The George, Northcroft, Reservoir Court, Slade Road and Venture House.

John Taylor Hospice (Top)
 
The John Taylor Hospice is on Grange Road in Erdington; it provides specialist medical and nursing services for patients with life-threatening illnesses.

The inpatient unit consists of 18 beds in single, double and 4-bed rooms; overnight accommodation is available for relatives; family support and bereavement services are provided; pets and children may visit.

This hospice has been managed by its own staff as an independent social enterprise since 01/04/11 (News Archive 26/03/11).
