St Anne's is a Roman Catholic church on Alcester Street,
Digbeth. It is a former gin distillery that was converted into a
church by Cardinal Newman in 1849.
Congregations peaked at 6,500
in the 1950's when a large Irish community lived in Digbeth;
nowadays, barely 40 attend mass.
The Oblates of Mary Immaculate, who took over
St Anne's in 1938, left Digbeth in 2010
(News August 2010). |
