| Oratory Church of the Immaculate Conception, Edgbaston |

The Birmingham Oratory is on the Hagley Road in the Chad Valley
area of Edgbaston. Designed in the Baroque style by E Doran Webb, it was built in 1909 with a copper dome, shallow transepts and a long nave flanked by a tunnel vault on a Corinthian colonnade. The interior contains coloured marbles, polychrome mosaics and an altar donated by the Chiesa di Sant Andrea della Valle in Rome. The Congregation of the Oratory was founded by St Philip Neri in the 16th century and the church also contains a shrine in his honour and a memorial to Cardinal Newman who founded the English branch of the Oratory in the mid-19th century. The site also contains the former St Philips RC Grammar School and a priest's house (circa 1850) in the Italian renaissance style that was once the home of Cardinal Newman. |
