St Augustine of Hippo

St Augustine of Hippo is the parish church of Rotton Park in Edgbaston.

Designed by JA Chatwin in the late 13th century style, it was built in sandstone with limestone banding in 1866-68 and features an apsidal chancel, north chancel, nave, aisles and 55-metre tower and spire: the tallest in Birmingham.

The ashlar-faced interior contains a painted ceiling, carvings by Roddis, stained glass by Hardman and reredos inspired by Da Vinci's Last Supper; a narthex was added in 1968.

St Augustine's has a strong musical tradition and was the first church with a surpliced choir in Birmingham.

Saint Peters is on Old Church Road in the Harborne area of south Birmingham.

Dating from 1200, it is the historic parish church of Harborne but was substantially rebuilt by Yeoville Thomasen in the 1880's; the tower is 14th century and was completed by unskilled labourers after the Black Death which explains why the clock, belfry and west door are out of line.

The interior contains stained-glass windows, a Victorian lectern and tiling; a richly-decorated pulpit with marble and alabaster statues of Jesus and the Apostles (1885); four charity boards (circa 1700), six sculptured angels; symbols of the Apostles and stained glass windows.

The famous Victorian landscape artist David Cox and Anne Vere Chamberlain, wife of Neville Chamberlain, are buried in the churchyard.
