Key Hill Cemetery
Key Hill Cemetery is a non-denominational burial ground laid out in 1836 by non-Conformist Christians off Icknield Street, Hockley.

Key Hill, which no longer accepts burials, is the oldest cemetery (not also a churchyard) in Birmingham. It contains many splendid tombs and monuments and is grade-2*-listed on the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.

The cemetery contains the final resting place of former mayor Joseph Chamberlain (plot 610k), pen magnet Joseph Gillot (374-375 E) and the founder of Birds Custard, Alfred Bird (164 H).

Unfortunately, the Doric Chapel designed by Charles Edge in 1837 has been demolished but his grade-two-listed entrance piers and railings survive on Icknield Street.

Warstone Lane Cemetery
Warstone Lane Cemetery is a Church of England burial ground in the Jewellery Quarter, Hockley.

The cemetery, which was laid out in 1847, contained a chapel that was demolished in 1954; however, a a blue-brick Tudor Gothic lodge, designed by JR Hamilton of Gloucester, has survived on Warstone Lane.

The cemetery contains many tombs and memorials including two tiers of catacombs where coffins, sealed with lead to prevent unhealthy smells, were deposited.

Famous Brummies interred at Warstone Lane include the 18th-century atheist print magnate John Baskerville.

Warstone Lane is grade-two-listed on the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.

Gravestone Stress Tests

Council officials have pushed over many headstones at Key Hill and Warstone Lane Cemeteries to avoid the risk of them falling on passers-by.

In March 2011, the Friends of Key Hill and Warstone Lane Cemeteries received a council grant of £4,000 to reinstate the toppled headstones (News Archive 25/03/11).
