There are six major canals, three canal loops and two branch canals in Birmingham.

Three canals converge in the Convention Quarter: the area most visited by tourists, and three beneath Spaghetti Junction: the area most visited by motorists.

During the Industrial Revolution, these canals were at the centre of a national network that connected the Trent and Mersey in the north with the Thames and Severn in the south.

Vast quantities of freight were shipped along these canals which created new industrial corridors through Birmingham.
