Birmingham City University originated as Birmingham Polytechnic in 1967 and was renamed the University of Central England in 1992 and Birmingham City University in 2007.

It is an independent corporation with a board of governors that is managed on a day-to-day basis by the Vice-Chancellor and three Pro-Vice-Chancellors.

Birmingham City University is ranked 66th out of 114 UK universities in the Guardian University Guide 2011.

It was ranked 58th by the Complete University Guide 2011 and 81st by the Times Ranking of UK Universities 2011.

The Birmingham Institute of Art and Design is a faculty of Birmingham City University.

It offers undergraduate, postgraduate, short and foundation courses in Art, Architecture, Jewellery, Visual Communication, Fashion & Textiles and 3D Design.

It has 4 campuses: Gosta Green, the Birmingham School of Jewellery, the Birmingham School of Art @ Margaret Street and the Birmingham School of Art @ Bournville

The Birmingham School of Art is a department of the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design.

It has two campuses: Linden Road in Bournville and Margaret Street in the Business Quarter of central Birmingham.

It offers undergraduate degrees in Fine Art & Art and Design

It also offers postgraduate degrees in Art and Design; Art, Health and Wellbeing; Arts and Education; Arts and Project Management; Arts Practice and Education; Contemporary Curatorial Practice; Digital Arts in Performance; Fine Art; History of Art and Design; Queer Studies in Art and Culture.

It also offers the BTEC Foundation Diploma in Art and Design and short courses in Art, Ceramics and Figure Drawing.

 
Bournville College of Art
 
Bournville College of Art is at Ruskin Hall on Linden Road in Bournville.

It was endowed by George Cadbury as an arts and crafts school influenced by the ideas of Victorian artist and intellectual John Ruskin in 1903.

It contains a gallery called International Project Space that showcases local and contemporary artists.

The college is now a department of the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design which is in turn a faculty of Birmingham City University.

Birmingham City Business School
 
Birmingham City Business School is a faculty of Birmingham City University on the City North campus in Perry Barr.

It offers undergraduate, postgraduate, part-time and short courses in three main subject areas: (1) Management & Human Resources (2) Accounting & Finance (3) Business & Marketing.

It also runs two specialist centres: (1) Leadership and Management Practice; (2) Internal Audit, Governance and Risk Management.

Faculty of Education Law and Social Sciences
 
Education Law and Social Services is a faculty of Birmingham City University on the City North Campus in Perry Barr.

It consists of three schools (1) Education & Teacher Training (2) Law (3) Social Sciences (sociology, psychology and criminology etc.).

The facilities include a drama studio, music practice rooms, art and design studios, a replica school gym, mock court room and technology & design suite.

The School of Law runs a Legal Advice and Representation Unit.

Faculty of Health
 
The Faculty of Health at Birmingham City University is located at the Seacole Building on the City South Campus in Edgbaston.

It is attended by over 7,000 students and consists of 4 schools: (1) Health & Social Care (2) Nursing & Midwifery (3) Professional Practice (4) the Defence School of Health Care Studies

It offers undergraduate courses in Nursing, Midwifery, Radiography, Health and Wellbeing, Speech and Language, Paramedic Science and Social Work etc.

It also offers postgraduate courses in Radiography, Public Health, Mental Health, Pain Management, Health and Social Care and Medical Ultrasound etc.

And short courses in Health Assessment, Basic Life Support, Bereavement Counselling, Immunisation and Vaccination, Intravenous Injection, Sexual Healthcare, Counselling Skills and Statement Writing etc.

The facilities include a plaster room, a radiotherapy skills centre,  a specialist health education library, a mock operating theatre, mock patient wards and a birthing room.

A new £2 million radiotherapy, radiography, speech and language wing, Seacole West, opened in September 2011 (News Headlines 21/09/11).

Technology, Engineering and the Environment is a faculty of Birmingham City University at (1) the City Centre Campus, Millennium Point and (2) the City North Campus, Perry Barr.

City North in Perry Barr is the main campus and administrative centre of Birmingham City University.

It is centred on a lawned quadrangle and consists of plate-glass and concrete buildings dating from the 1960's.

The campus contains (1) Birmingham City Business School (2) Faculty of Law Education & Social Sciences (3) School of Media (4) School of English (5) William Kenrick Library (6) Students Union (7) Doug Ellis Sports Centre (8) Coppice Gardens Hall of Residence (9) Oscott Hall of Residence

City South Campus: Birmingham City University
 
City South  is a campus of Birmingham City University on Westbourne Road in the Chad Valley area of Edgbaston.

It contains the Faculty of Health, three student halls (Calthorpe, Oakmount, Westmount) and a union bar, cafe, convenience store and laundry.

Planned City Centre Expansion
 
Birmingham City University plans to build a new city centre campus in Eastside.

It was originally intended for a 4.1-acre site between Park Street and New Canal Street but this land is now required for a high-speed railway station.

The campus will now be built on a smaller site adjoining Millennium Point and will contain a single building for the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (News Archive 07/02/11).

It accommodates around 420 students in 5-8 bedroom flats.

The university also owns 29 student houses on Oscott Road and 3 on Wellhead Lane which contain a total of 98 study bedrooms.

 
Halls of Residence @ City South Campus
 
Calthorpe, Oakmount and Westmount (map) are self-catering student halls of residence containing a total of 208 rooms on the City South Campus of Birmingham City University in Edgbaston.

The site also contains a block of postgraduate flats.

Parking is limited.

 
Hamstead Hall of Residence
 
Hamstead Hall of Residence (map) is on Friary Road in Handsworth Wood.

It is a 16-acre site that accommodates 54 students in self-catering flats and rooms.

The core building is a former Methodist Training College in the Gothic Style dating from 1881.

Other facilities include table tennis rooms, badminton courts, a chapel, laundrette, TV room, and student union pub called the Village Inn.

 
Jennens Court Student Village
 
Jennens Court (map) is a privately-owned student hall of residence barely 200 metres from Aston University and the city centre campus of Birmingham City University.

It accommodates around 300 students in 3-6 bedroom self-catering flats.

The facilities include a laundry, bike store and car park.

 
Curzon Gateway Student Village
 
Curzon Gateway (map) is a self-catering student hall of residence barely 300 metres from Aston University and the city centre campus of Birmingham City University.

It accommodates around 250 students in 4-6 bedroom flats.

Parking is limited and chargeable.

 
Sport @ Birmingham City University
 
The main sporting facilities at Birmingham City University are the Doug Ellis Centre on City North Campus and the Pavilion on Moor Lane in Witton.
 
Doug Ellis Sports Centre
 
The Doug Ellis Sports Centre is on Wellhead Lane in Perry Barr.

It contains a fitness suite, sports hall, spinning studio, workout studio, an all-weather pitch and changing rooms.

The centre is operated by Serco Leisure on behalf of the university and is open to staff, students and the general public.

The Pavilion @ Witton
 
The Pavilion is a conference, events and sports venue on Moor Lane in Witton.

It contains a bar, banqueting suite, function room, meeting room, first aid room, plasma screens, a floodlit all-weather pitch, 2 cricket nets, 2 rugby pitches, 12 football pitches, 22 changing rooms and ample parking.

The Pavilion is managed by SERCO in partnership with Birmingham City University.

Birmingham City Students Union
 
Birmingham City Students Union is headquartered on Franchise Street at the City North Campus in Perry Barr.

It is run by elected Executive Officers answerable to an elected Student Council.

The union provides advice, representation and entertainment and supports clubs, societies and sports teams.

It has its own radio station called Scratch and publishes the Spaghetti student magazine.

Other facilities include Bar 42, the Student Activities Centre, the Media Centre, a coffee shop, live venue, common room, beautician, hair salon and convenience store.

The union also has satellite facilities at the City South campus, the Hamstead Hall of Residence, the Conservatoire and the Gosta Green Campus.
