Overview

Birmingham City University originated as a group of colleges and technical schools that combined to form Birmingham Polytechnic in 1971.

Birmingham Polytechnic became the University of Central England in 1992 and was renamed Birmingham City University in 2007.

The university is attended by around 18,500 undergraduates, 3,400 postgraduates and 900 further education students.

It has six faculties: (1) Birmingham Institute of Art & Design (2) Birmingham City Business School (3) Education Law & Social Sciences (4) Health (5) Technology Engineering & the Environment and (6) Performance Media & English.

The main campus is at Perry Barr; there are 7 other campuses at:

(1) Gosta Green in Eastside; (2) Millennium Point in Eastside; (3) Margaret Street and (4) Paradise Place in the Business Quarter (5) Vittoria Street in the Jewellery Quarter; (6) Linden Road in Bournville and (7) Westbourne Road in Edgbaston.

The university also owns a residential campus in Handsworth Wood and a function hall and sports pitches at Moor Lane in Witton.

Birmingham City University should not be confused with the University of Birmingham which is the oldest and largest university in Birmingham and which is based in the university quarter of Edgbaston.

The City North campus is on Wellhead Lane in Perry Barr.

It is the main campus of Birmingham City University and is centred on a lawned quadrangle and characterised by brutalist plate glass and concrete buildings.

The campus contains:

(1) Birmingham City Business School; (2) Faculty of Law Education & Social Sciences; (3) School of Media (4) School of English and (5) William Kenrick Library (6) Birmingham City Students Union (7) City North Sports Centre (8) Two Halls of Residence: Coppice & Oscott Gardens

Birmingham City Students Union is on Franchise Street at City North Campus in Perry Barr.

The union provides advice, representation and entertainment; it supports student clubs, societies and sports teams and publishes the Spaghetti magazine.

 The facilities include a hair salon, convenience store, coffee shop, lounge, the Tiger TV studio, the Scratch radio station, a University Choices Office, a pub & events space called Bar 42 and an activities and resource centre.

City North Sports Centre (Top Index)

The City North Sports Centre is at City North Campus in Perry Barr.

The centre, which opened on the former site of the Ansells Sports Club in January 2010, contains an 80-station fitness suite, an 8-court sports hall, workout and spinning studios.

It is operated by Serco Leisure and is open to staff, students and the general public.

 The William Kenrick Library is at City North Campus in Perry Barr

It is the main library of Birmingham City University and contains a broad range of journals, catalogues, periodicals and statistical publications.

The facilities include an open access computer suite, group study rooms, study carrels, audio-visual equipment, photocopiers and vending machines.

Student Accommodation @ City North (Top Index)

The Coppice and Oscott Gardens are self-catering student villages at City North Campus in Perry Barr.

The Coppice on Wellhead Lane contains 432 single study bedrooms; there are two bathrooms, a kitchen and lounge for every six students.

Oscott Gardens on Oscott Road contains 419 en suite study bedrooms; there is one kitchen and one lounge for every five/eight students.

The City South Campus is on Westbourne Road in the Chad Valley area of Edgbaston.

 The campus contains the Faculty of Health, three halls of residence, retail, leisure and social units.

Student Accommodation @ City South (Top Index)

The City South Campus on Westbourne Road in the Chad Valley contains three self-catering student halls: Calthorpe, Oakmount and Westmount.

They accommodate a total of 295 students and mainly consist of single study bedrooms with shared bathrooms, kitchens and lounge.

All the rooms have a private telephone line and an ethernet connection to the university's data network. Parking is limited.

The facilities include a bar, cafe, shop, common room, laundry, security office and accommodation office.

The City South Campus also contains a block of postgraduate flats.

The City Centre Campus is at Millennium Point on Curzon Street in Eastside.

This campus contains the Birmingham School of Acting and the Faculty of Technology Engineering & Environment (formerly the Technology Innovation Centre).

New City Centre Campus (Top Index)

A new flagship city centre campus will be built next to Millennium Point in Birmingham Eastside.

The 4.1-acre site will contain buildings for the Institute of Art & Design and for the Conservatoire and Adrian Boult Hall which will relocate from Paradise Place in the Business Quarter.

The new campus will open in 2013.

The Gosta Green campus is at the Aston Triangle in Eastside.

It is the main campus of the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design and contains the schools of Architecture, Visual Communication, Fashion Textiles and 3D Design.

The facilities include exhibition space, editing & animation suites, a library, theatre, print room, photographic studios, fashion workshops, textiles rooms with computerised looms & printers, wood & metal workshops, medical rooms, an art shop, eatery, student services and union office.

The Hamstead Residential Campus houses 700 students on Friary Road in Handsworth Wood.

 The campus contains two halls of residence and twelve three-storey blocks of flats set in sixteen acres of landscaped grounds.

The halls are a converted Methodist Training College (1881) in the Gothic style.

The facilities include a chapel, laundrette, television room, badminton courts, ping pong tables and a student union bar. The accommodation is self-catering.

The Pavilion (Top Index)

The Pavilion is a community function room, events space and sports venue on Moor Lane in Witton. It is managed by Serco in partnership with Birmingham City University.

The function room may be hired for civil weddings, receptions, funeral wakes and private parties. There are regular live music gigs, dances, and disco nights.

The sports facilities may be hired by schools and clubs.

The facilities include a bar, banqueting suite, meeting room, first aid room, plasma screens, 12 grass pitches, 2 rugby pitches, 2 cricket nets, a floodlit all-weather pitch and 22 changing rooms.

There is ample coach and car parking.

The Birmingham City Business School is a faculty of Birmingham City University based at City North Campus in Perry Barr.

It is attended by around 1950 full-time undergraduates, 350 full-time postgraduates and 1700 part-time students who study a range of business-related subjects such as PR, marketing, finance, economics, accountancy, human resources, business law, advertising and business psychology.

The school is divided into three departments: (1) Management & Human Resources; (2) Accounting & Finance; (3) Business & Marketing.

It contains two specialist centres: (1) Leadership and Management Practice; (2) Internal Audit, Governance and Risk Management.

The Faculty of Education Law & Social Services is based at City North Campus in Perry Barr.

The faculty consists of three schools: (1) Education & Teacher Training; (2) Law; (3) Social Sciences, including sociology, psychology and criminology.

Teacher training resources include interactive whiteboards, a replica school gym, music practice rooms, a drama studio, art & design studios and a technology & design suite.

The School of Law has its own mock court room, a student-led mooting society and a Legal Advice and Representation Unit.

The Faculty of Health is a national centre of excellence for the development of clinical skills and practice-based learning.

It is based at the Seacole Building on City South Campus in the Chad Valley area of Edgbaston.

The faculty is attended by over 7,000 full and part-time students studying a range of foundation and undergraduate degrees, postgraduate qualifications and short professional development courses.

The faculty comprises four schools: (1) Health & Social Care; (2) Nursing & Midwifery; (3) Professional Practice; (4) the Defence School of Health Care Studies

The facilities include mock wards, a birthing room, a plaster room, a mock operating theatre, a radiotherapy skills centre and a specialist health education library.

Students are trained for careers in social work, nursing, midwifery, radiography etc. Many undertake clinical placements as part of their degrees. The Faculty also trains military medics.

The Faculty of Technology, Engineering and the Environment (TEE) is based on the City Centre Campus at Millennium Point in Eastside.

The faculty was established as the Technology Innovation Centre in 2000 and is a national centre of excellence for learning, innovation and technology.

Birmingham Conservatoire (Top Index)

 The Birmingham Conservatoire on Paradise Place in the Business Quarter is a department of the Faculty of Performance Media & English.

 It was established in 1886 as the Birmingham School of Music and offers a range of music-related courses from an HND in popular music to undergraduate degrees in music technology and postgraduate qualifications in jazz.

There is also a junior department for talented young musicians.

The Conservatoire is attended by around 500 full-time students and employs around 50 full-time and 200 visiting tutors, many of whom are professional musicians.

The facilities include six recording studios, a specialist music library, practice rooms, a refectory and coffee bar.

The Conservatoire is also a major concert venue whose main stage is the 518-seat Adrian Boult Hall. Other venues include the Recital Hall and Arena Foyer

There are plans to redevelop Paradise Place and relocate the Conservatoire to a new campus in Birmingham Eastside.

Birmingham School of Acting (Top Index)

The Birmingham School of Acting is a department of the Faculty of Performance Media & English; it is located on the City Centre Campus at Millennium Point in Eastside.

The school was established in 1936 as the Birmingham School of Speech and Drama and was formerly based at Paradise Place in the Business Quarter; it moved to Millennium Point in 2000.

The school, which is attended by around 130 full-time students, offers training paths in acting, performance and theatre; it also provides part-time courses and organises summer schools.

Students regularly stage productions at the Crescent Theatre in Brindleyplace.

The Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD) is a faculty of Birmingham City University.

It consists of the following schools:(1) Architecture; (2) Art; (3) Fashion Textiles and 3D Design; (4) Jewellery; (5) Visual Communication and (6) Visual Arts

The faculty is spread over four campuses attended by around 4,000 students.

The main campus is at Gosta Green in the Aston Triangle; it contains the schools of Architecture, Visual Communication, Fashion Textiles and 3D Design.

Birmingham School of Art (Top Index)

The School of Art is a department of the Birmingham Institute of Art & Design.

The main facade is on Margaret Street in the Business Quarter with side elevations on Edmund Street and Cornwall Street.

 The School of Art was established by the Birmingham Society of Artists in the 1840's and became the first municipal art school in England when it was acquired by Birmingham Corporation in 1877.

The school moved to its present red-brick Gothic premises in 1885. The building, one of the finest in Birmingham, is Grade I listed.

The interior contains numerous workshops and studios; a glazed extension on Cornwall Street provides a large naturally-lit area.

A broad range of courses are offered including fine art, art and education, art health and well-being, contemporary curatorial practice and digital art in performance. The school also trains art teachers.

Students regularly present their work in collaboration with the Ikon Gallery.

Birmingham School of Jewellery (Top Index)

 The Birmingham School of Jewellery on Vittoria Street in the Jewellery Quarter is a department of the Birmingham Institute of Art & Design.

The school first opened on Ellen Street in the 1840's and moved to its present site in 1890.

The right wing of the school is a former goldsmith's workshop (circa 1860) that was rebuilt by the architects Chamberlain and Martin in the 1880's. The top floor was added in 1906, the central section in 1911 and the left wing in 1993.

An inscription above the main entrance reads: "The Municipal School of Jewellery and Silversmiths".

The school offers full and part-time courses in such areas as engraving, industrial design, jewellery-making, silversmithing and horology.

Many of these courses can be taken as part of a broader degree programme.

Bournville Centre For Visual Arts (Top Index)

The Centre for Visual Arts on Linden Road in Bournville is a department of the Birmingham Institute of Art & Design.

The centre is housed in two refurbished listed buildings that contain a specialist art library, modern studios & workshops, a computer suite, a cafe and a contemporary exhibition gallery known as International Project Space.

The centre teaches art, design and the visual arts and fosters creative self-development.

Students work in a broad range of materials from clay, ceramics, plaster and glass through to print, film, textiles and photography.
