Runway Extension at Birmingham Airport (Top Menu)

Emirates departure from Birmingham International Airport. Original image Mandy Barry-Cades. Image (cropped and resized brumagem) licensed for reuse under the Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike 2.0 License

Most passenger flights from Birmingham International Airport are to destinations in the UK, Ireland and continental Europe; however, some airlines also operate to destinations in north Africa, the Caribbean, the Middle-East and the eastern seaboard of the USA.

The airport has a limited range because its runway is only 2,600 metres long and therefore too short for direct long-haul traffic.

Plans to extend it by 400 metres southwards have been approved; however, the project is controversial for the usual environmental reasons and has been delayed; completion is now scheduled for 2014.

The extension, which is budgeted at £120 million, will increase the range of destinations and could double passenger numbers from 9 million in 2009 to 18 million by 2025.

In April 2010, it was reported that the extension might not be completed until 2017 due to problems caused by the recession; however, funding and planning consent were in place (News Archive 10/04/10)
