Birmingham Airport is located at Bickenhill in the Metropolitan Borough of Solihull, roughly 8 miles east of Birmingham city centre.

The apron contains one runway, one passenger terminal, three hotels, two cargo terminals and five car parks.

18.6% of Birmingham Airport is owned by Birmingham City Council; 30.4% by six other West Midlands local authorities; 48.2% by the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan and Victorian Funds Management Corporation and 2.8% by an airport employee trust.

Birmingham City Council and the 6 other West Midland local authority shareholders have agreed not to separately dispose of their holdings before 2012.

An internal audit valued Birmingham City Council's 18.6% stake in the airport at £67 million in October 2010 (News Archive 28/10/10).

According to this valuation, the airport is worth around £360 million.

Birmingham is the 6th busiest airport in the UK after Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton and Manchester.

Passenger flows were down by 5.5% year-on-year in 2008/09 when 9.108 million passengers passed through the airport (News Archive 19/01/10).

Passenger flows were down by 5.8% year-on-year in 2009/2010 when 8.578 million passengers passed through the airport (News Archive 28/01/11).

Birmingham Airport has one passenger terminal on Trident Road off Airport Way.

The old terminals 1 and 2 have been merged in order to reduce costs in the face of falling passenger numbers.

The new combined One Terminal, which was opened by Transport Secretary Phillip Hammond in May 2011, contains enlarged security, arrivals and onward travel areas and additional retail and restaurant units (Map of Terminal).

Driving to Birmingham Airport (Top)
 
The passenger terminals are reached via a service road off the A45 called Airport Way. The approach is dominated by Takeoff, a steel sculpture installed in 1985 to mark 40 years of peace in Europe.

The A45 connects the airport to Birmingham city centre (8 miles) and to the motorway network via Junction 6 of the M42 (1.2 miles).

Traffic from the north-west travelling on the M6 should join the M42 at Exit 4A and then the A45 at Exit 6.

Traffic from the north-east travelling on the M42 should join the A45 at Exit 6.

Traffic from the south travelling on the M40 should join the M42 at Exit 3A and then the A45 at Exit 6.

Traffic from the south-west travelling on the M5 should join the M42 at Exit 4A and then the A45 at Exit 6.

Traffic from the south-east travelling on the M1 should join the M6 at Exit 19, the M42 at Exit 4 and then the A45 at Exit 6.

There are three multi-storey car parks for short-stay parking & pick-ups on Ramp Road (Map), Ambassador Road (Map) and Vanguard Road (Map).

There is a rapid drop-off zone on Comet Road, immediately outside the terminal, and two long-stay surface car parks (Map 1, Map 2) on either side of Airport Road.

A shuttle runs at 15 minute intervals between the long-stay car parks and the passenger terminal.
